Like your back-to-school wardrobe, your smile needs to be prepped and ready for the school year as well! As you check off your traditional back-to-school checklist, make sure you also work on your back-to-school dental checklist, which should include the following tasks:

1. Schedule your six month dental appointments.
It is strongly recommended that you visit your dentist every six months for a routine dental checkup. These checkups are extremely important and they are vital if you wish to have a clean and healthy oral cavity.

2. Establish an oral hygiene routine and stay committed to it.
As you rush off to school, it is easy to forget about brushing and flossing your teeth. But, if you establish a hygiene routine before school starts, you won’t have the problem of going to school with a dirty smile and smelly breath.

3. Pack yourself healthy food for lunch and snacks.
Healthy food not only helps with your overall health, but it also helps improve the health of your pearly white chompers! Try to eat more fruits, vegetables, string cheese, and unsweetened applesauce instead of granola bars, candy, and fruit roll-ups. If you do so, you will have a smaller chance at developing tooth decay!

4. Guard your smile with a mouth guard.
If you participate in contact sports or activities, it is best to do so with a mouth guard. If you protect your smile by wearing a mouth guard, the hard, forceful objects that hit it will refrain from injuring your oral cavity.

5. Replace your worn toothbrush.
Dentists today strongly recommend replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months or after your toothbrush has been extremely worn down. The beginning of a new school year is a great time to check your toothbrush and replace it if needed!
