Did you know there are snacks you can put in your child’s lunchbox that can help your child grow into the strong and healthy smile they deserve? Well, it’s true! Along with keeping up on oral hygiene and visiting the dentist, Dr. Jaclyn Turnbow, it’s important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. So, to help you pack your child a tooth-healthy lunch each day, our Summit Village Dental dental team encourages you to do the following things:

-Don’t pack applesauce: Applesauce is practical and portable, which makes things extremely convenient. However, it’s not convenient for your child’s smile. Applesauce is packed with natural and added sugar that can cause tooth decay. Instead of applesauce, pack a small container of cottage cheese.

-Choose real fruit: Oftentimes fruit snacks and fruit leathers find their way into the lunchbox. However, they can be extremely dangerous to the smile because they cling to the teeth and promote plaque buildup. Instead of packing these snacks, pack real fruit, like grapes, oranges, bananas, and apples.

-Provide plain milk: Chocolate, strawberry, and other flavors of milk can be harmful for the teeth because they coat the smile with sugar. This is why it’s best to pack plain milk in your child’s lunch. If they aren’t intrigued by the plain milk, you can always add food coloring.

If you pack your child snacks that don’t harm or attack the smile, your child will be on their way to a strong and healthy smile.
